Plant-for-the-Planet Ghana
Plant-for-the-Planet Ghana is an independent, non-profit and non-governmental organization operating in Ghana, founded in 2020 by Mohammed Rabiu Dannakabu. It advocates for and empowers young people to fight the climate crisis and restore degraded ecosystems in the Northern Savannah Ecological Zone in Ghana.

In total, we planted 15,280 trees over the course of 9 planting days, thanks to the active support of the local community. Of course, the work of growing the seedlings in the nursery and caring for the trees after planting carries on throughout the year.
The story behind the big fire in January 2023
The United Nations has 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The first of these is to fight poverty; the second is to fight hunger. Ghana is facing both of these issues, and this affects Plant-for-the Planet Ghana's work.
In January 2023 there was a big fire on our restoration sites due to arson. Once the police had completed their investigation, we found out that a 70-year-old man had started the fire. The reason: he was hungry and set the fire to try to catch fleeing rats to eat them. Poverty is still a big issue in Ghana that we cannot ignore.
Climate justice should consider social justice as well.
We do not blame this man for setting the fire. He was hungry and had no money, how can we blame someone for being hungry? However, this was a huge setback because we lost many, many trees. What we do know is: We will never stop planting and we will never stop restoring Ghana's wonderful savanna ecosystems. Click the link below to find out how you can help.
Trees Planted in 2022 by Species
In total, we planted 38,275 trees over the course of 21 planting days thanks to the active support of the local community. Of course, the work of growing the seedlings in the nursery and caring for the trees after planting carries on throughout the year.

Plant-for-Ghana
Plant-for-Ghana is a hybrid restoration project. We believe sustainable restoration is the best way to bring back the lost forest in the Northern Savannah Ecological Zone of Ghana, thereby contributing to Plant-for-the-Planet's goal to plant one trillion trees worldwide.
This hybrid project combines two approaches: the planting of native species and the planting of agroforestry species in mixed stands. By planting high diversity tree mixes in deforested areas, we not only ensure that restored forests are resilient to the ongoing threats of the climate crisis, but also establish a multi-functional forest with more productive forest stands. Growing both native tree species that will not be harvested and agroforestry species ensures that local communities can also benefit from our work.
Planting 7 Native Species
Plant-for-Ghana currently plants on 1,000 hectares leased by Plant-for-the-Planet Ghana in Banpewa near Bamboi in Ghana's Savannah region. So far, seven species have been planted, five native and two non-native agroforestry species.

The project creates green jobs in rural areas - providing local families with a sustainable source of income - through direct employment as well as activities harvesting Non-Timber Forest Products like beekeeping for women and youth. It also increases awareness within the local community for the importance of tree biodiversity, as well as creating a biodiverse ecosystem for several plant and animal species and creates additional carbon sinks. Furthermore, the project contributes directly to the achievement of the United Nations Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
Plant-for-the-Planet Ghana Academies
Plant-for-the-Planet Ghana organizes Academies, day-long workshops to empower children and youth between the ages of 9 and 14. They are trained during Academies to fight for climate justice, give speeches and join the network of about 100,000 trained Climate Justice Ambassadors worldwide.

Plant-for-the-Planet is a global movement to restore forest ecosystems to tackle the climate crisis and biodiversity loss. To do so, we empower young people, restore ecosystems, conduct restoration research, provide free software tools and restoration advice for organizations around the world. We believe that we need to protect the world’s three trillion trees and bring back a further trillion trees. We are a network of independent non-profit organizations worldwide, led by the Plant-for-the-Planet Foundation.
The Founder of Plant-for-the-Planet Ghana is Mohammed Rabiu Dannakabu, a long-term Climate Justice Ambassador, who has represented Plant-for-the-Planet for a decade, empowering children and youth in Ghana and establishing the restoration project Plant-for-Ghana, which aims to plant 10,000,000 trees in the Savannah Ecological Zone of Ghana by 2030.
Our Restoration Team
1 Nursery/Planting Manager
Manages the nursery and restoration site of Plant-for-Ghana - controls and monitors the growth of the seedlings in the nursery, supervises planting at the site, as well as their survival and growth.

Responsible for protecting the restoration area from human interference and animal destruction, also monitoring the growth of the trees and carrying out pest and disease control.
